The Sand Dune

Lido Key, FL

Completed 2023

The westernmost lot on Lido Key presents an irregular shaped angled lot. Several complications arose from this site with State mandated datums and approval to light pollution turtle compliance. The vicinity to the Gulf of Mexico was also a factor in designing the structure to limit north-south shear walls to resist flooding and wave action as well as support the uniquely shaped floor plates. The goal of our Client was to achieve the appearance and feel of a yacht floating in the ocean.

Complications come in stride when designing a destination, a navigational landmark much like a lighthouse. The concept derives from the ebb and flow of the waves crashing onto the beach. Cascading and retreating, the curves are the movement over and under the rigid fabric of our structured reality. Each curve intertwines with the next as multiple layers or depths create a surface in the sculptural walls. Voids in this skin allow glimpses of the structure hidden beyond. These glimpses allow light to filter in and views out. This home was built for entertainment. Featuring four bedrooms, four full baths and three powder baths, the home still offers more. A theater, home office, gym with sauna, game room, outdoor jogging track, and the crown; a second-floor elevated infinity edge pool overlooking the Gulf. A bowsprit of sorts has the pool teetering out toward the water creating a seamless transition from pool to ocean. The reflections off the pool bounce into the spaces of the home. Twinkling and dancing reflections on the walls, vibrant colors of each sunset painting the white wall blank canvas.
